Collar Keys for Electronic, Magnetic, and Automatic Pet Doors
Looking for a pet door? Take a look at our full selection of automatic doggie doors.
When buying a replacement collar key, recognize that they are not interchangeable between dog doors and cat doors. All electronic doors also come with at least one of these collar keys, so these are only for replacement and additional pets. It's important to get the correct SmartKey and collar tags for your doggie door or cat door.
If you're having trouble recognizing the brand you require, examine the images in the electronic pet door section for the type of pet door you have: In a door, wall, sliding glass door, etc. You'll probably recognize your pet door. However, the dog and cat magnet keys are just magnets so they are interchangeable. The staywell collar keys are now called the Petsafe magnetic cat flap collar key. Also, the only key for a dog door with collar included is the High Tech Power Pet door.
Electronic, Magnetic, or RFID Collar Keys?
Most collar keys for electronic pet doors attach to your dog collar or pet's collar. Most brands, including the High Tech Pet Power Pet, PetSafe Electronic Smartdoor, and Sureflap Microchip Pet Door have replacement keys.
'Electronic' pet doors sense a collar key, then unlock or actually open. A number of different kinds of collar keys have been used to trigger magnetic pet doors including infrared, high pitched sound (ultrasonic collar), magnets and most recently RFID chips.
In the case of the magnet type, the pet door senses the magnetic field to activate. In all cases, the pet door must be powered either with batteries or an ac adaptor for energy efficiency. The collar key itself may be powered or not. A magnet, for example, requires no power. The RFID type is also passive and requires no batteries.

By contrast, "magnetic" pet doors use only magnets for collar keys and rely upon the strength of the magnet to actually unlock the flap. Since the magnet does the work, the pet door requires no power to operate making them very handy for door installations in areas where power isn't available. As well, they are not affected by a power outage or dead batteries.
Many doors have special features that distinguish them from the other pet doors and make the lives of pet owners easier, like wall mount options for wall installation, energy-efficient and weatherproof design, waterproof collar keys, and directional sensing system. Some doors are better for small dogs and cats, while some door frames work for large dogs up to a point. One or two automatic dog doors even lift the flap automatically, without making your pet push a flap open. Some have easy installation and some have more sturdy designs. We recommend looking through the features of both the door and the collar keys to find the best electronic dog door for you.
There are electronic doors for sliding doors, patio panels for patio doors, door mounts, and bestseller wall mounts. Many of the doors come with multi-year warranties, 4-way access control, and sturdy deadbolt locks. There are unique benefits of having an electronic pet door, like keeping stray animals and raccoons out, having radio frequency selective control, rechargeable battery options, and full access for your pet!
So what is an 'automatic' pet door? It could be any of these!
