Extra-large doggie door sizes will vary significantly between models and manufacturers, so it is very important to go by the flap size and not just the title that has "large" or "extra-large" or "super-large". Sizing depends on the brand. You may think you need extra large doggie doors when in reality, it's a common large size.

Why does going from the large size to the extra-large make such a difference in cost?

Cost is determined based on the brand and the size. Across the board, having a giant or x-large dog door makes the cost increase dramatically. With the extra-large pet doors, there is more material used, and the shipping cost goes up because of the x-large shipping.

Are there any options for a Pet Patio Door Insert?

Is there an electronic extra large wall dog door?

Unfortunately not, there are no wall entry electronic options that will work for extra large dogs. There are plenty of large doors for manual pet doors. 

Which doggie door for large dogs can people get in?

Some of the extra-large dog doors for large dogs are large enough, but they will come with a security cover that you can use to close it off. In addition to this, seeing a door of this size will be enough to determine even the bravest intruder.

Will extra-large dog doors keep my cat in?

If they have very strong magnets, big dog doors like the Endura Flap they may be able to keep the cat from pushing out. That said if the cat is tenacious enough even the xl dog doors might not be enough to keep them in.

Is there an option for a screen door with a large dog door built-in?

Are "xxl large" dog doors enough for a big dog like a Great Dane?

The size of an extra-large dog door is going to change just based on the brand, as there is no standard in the XL dog door world. Some brands like the Giant Hale Pet Door for doors and walls and the Endura Flap Pet Doors have large dog doors that will fit Danes and Mastiffs.

I have two large dogs that are very different sizes. What door would be able to accommodate more than 1 large dog?

There are a few large dog doors that can accommodate multiple pets. One of the best large dog door manufacturers would be the Endura Pet Door line. In addition to that, the best large dog door for sliding glass door installation is going to be the Hale in the Giant Flap Size. They can make their large doggie door big enough to fit a dog that is 36" tall at the shoulders. If you were looking for one that was more economical another good large dog door brand would be Ideal Pet Products. Those doors aren't as durable especially in the giant breed dog door sizes, as they tend to wear out faster and require more replacement parts of the life of the pet door.

Do you have a raccoon-safe dog door for a large dog?

Considering a removable door for sliding glass doors, but I need one that will fit a Great Dane. I'm concerned about security.

The best large doggie door for sliding glass door installation would be the Hale Omni Panel for Sliding doors. This would really be the only option for doggy doors for large dogs that is also removable. They have a custom 10" step over option and that would make it the biggest dog door for a panel offered.

How do I decide if the extra-large dog door should be installed in the door or the wall?

This depends on if the wall mount has an acceptable step-over for your large pet. We recommend that even for an extra-large doggie door there be no more than about 3" - 4" from the floor. This is so as the pet ages and stepping over something might become more challenging, the door is still going to be low enough for them to use. Sometimes customers end up having to go with an XXL dog door, even through their pets don't need a giant breed dog door, in order to keep the step over low enough. Also in some cases, an extra-large doggie door may have a cut-out dimension that will not fit in between the studs, so in that case, the door mount would be the only option (unless you wanted to have you contractor do some substantial re-framing). Large breed dog doors for wall installation are also going to cost more, and door mount large doors will be more affordable.

What are wall hole dimensions for the extra-large dog door?

With extra-large doggie doors for walls, the cut out will vary based on the manufacturer you choose. One thing to keep in mind is dog doors for big dogs also will have rough cut out widths that are larger than normal. You want to make sure where you are installing it there is enough room for the cut-out. In some cases, the width of the pet door might mean that it will not fit between studs. 

Will the extra-large dog door fit in different types of sliding glass dog doors?

A large doggy door will fit in most sliding doors, however with an extra-large dog door for sliding glass door installed you will lose a large amount of room for you to be able to get through. Make sure to open your sliding door to the dimension of the overall panel width and see if you can get through. If not, having a panel that is removable could be an option so you could take it out when you needed. 

We have an 'overweight' basset hound who is having trouble with our regular doggy door. Do you have something a little wider?

We do have some that are a little wider, but some customers have to go with something that is a bit taller than they would normally choose in order to get the wider flaps, being that most dog doors for big dogs are rectangular. You can also get a custom made pet door by Hale, this way you can have a flap the width you need, but not the extra height. They can essentially make you a square dog door if needed!

I have an extra-large pet door that is still in fine shape. I have a new dog that is half the size of the old dog. She won't go through the door due to its weight. Do you have a lighter flap replacement?

Since the flaps aren't interchangeable there is not a lighter one that you could use to replace the one you have, so you would have to replace it with a new smaller door. It may be possible to remove the big dog door you have and frame in a bit to install a new pet door.

Is there an extra-large dog door that is waterproof and doesn't make too much noise?

The Hale Pet Doors do seal pretty well in the double flap models. The Endura flap is the best sealing, but because of the magnet strength on those, they do tend to be louder than other doors. Generally, the loud magnets are a sign of a good weatherproof door.

I have five dogs ranging from a 20-pound Dachshund to an 80-pound hound who stands 25 inches at the shoulder. I want to put in a wall door that all five can use. It must protect from the weather.

The best door for multiple pets sharing is the Hale pet door for walls in the double flap. The way the magnets are positioned it is easy for the smaller pets to use even in the xxl dog door sizes. In addition, because they have 11 stock sizes to choose from there are many more options to be able to comfortably accommodate all of your pets.

Is there a microchip sliding glass pet door for large dogs?

There is not a large microchip door in general. The largest microchip option has a flap that is 7"w x 7"h, so really only suitable for cats and very small dogs. The High Tech Power Pet Doors do require a collar key, but those doors are 12"w x 16"h and will fit bigger pets.

Do you have a door like a microchip door big enough for larger dogs?

There are not big doors with the microchip technology, so all large doggy door options that are electronic would require a collar key. We have the High Tech and the PetSafe models that offer this option.

Can a person fit through a large dog door?

If your dog is very large, then a person might be able to fit through their pet door. The solution is an automatic dog door extra large dogs can use. These stay locked until your dog approaches wearing their special collar key.

How does automatic pet door work?

Automatic pet doors scan for your dog's microchip or special collar key to unlock only for them. Right now, these doors are made for cats and small dogs. An automatic dog door extra large dogs can use hasn't been made yet.
