Some ideal installation options for your indoor cat door include the following:

Wall

While in-wall installations are more expensive and require more handyman skills, they are more stable than a cat door for interior hollow doors. In-wall installations are especially great for giving your cat their own entrance into another room, as you wouldn’t need to make sure if the door to the room is opened or not.

How Do You Install a Cat Door in an Interior Door

  1. Measure your pet’s height, making sure that the top of the door is at least 1” above their shoulders. Mark your pet’s height on the door.
  2. Remove your pet door from its packaging.
  3. Match the template that comes with your pet door with the height mark on your door. Tape the template to the door and trace the outline. Remove the template.
  4. Drill holes in each corner of the outline. Use a jigsaw to cut out the holes, starting at one corner and following the lines.
  5. Check to see that your pet door fits by placing the pet door frame inside the cutout. If it doesn’t fit, trim the opening until it does. Be careful not to overcut.
  6. Install your pet door according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This will be different for every pet door.
  7. Test that your door works by having your pet walk through it.
