Please read instructions & notes thoroughly before installation.
Step 1 Measure Your Pet
- If you have not yet measured your pet, be sure to measure them according to this measurement guide.
- Take your measuring tape and measure from the bottom of the door. Using a pencil, mark 2” above your pet’s shoulder height. Make sure the line itself is level and straight.
Step 2 Trace Template
- Take the locking cover / install template for your door and place the top along your pencil line. While holding the cover against the door, trace around the cover / template. Using the level make sure the rectangle is level and centered on your door.
Step 3 Drill Reference Holes
- Using a drill and a 3/8” drill bit, drill the four corners of the rectangle for reference holes. Drill out all 4 corners inside of the lines.
Step 4 Cut Opening
- Next, insert your jigsaw into one of the starter holes, and cut along the lines into the reference holes. Cut all four sides. Gently remove and discard the cut out material. Wipe the area clean.
Step 5 Install Frame
- Inserting the outside frame first, sandwich both frames onto the door, making sure they are flush. Once together, hand fit the screws in place and hand tighten. Then, with a power drill or screwdriver, tighten the screws down.
Step 6 Check Flap Movement
- Check the movement and fit of the flap. Check the locking cover, ensuring that it locks in place.
If you do not have the tools or skills to properly install your pet door, we suggest using a professional handyperson or contacting a professional installer from our list of local installers.
Cleaning the Flap
Use a clean rag and fresh water to remove dirt and grime that may accumulate on the flap panel surface. DO NOT USE strong detergents, pine or lemon oil, or any type of solvents as these will permanently damage the flap panels and flexible hinges.

What is the difference between the Original and Deluxe? The Ideal Original frame is a plastic pet door, whereas the Deluxe has an aluminum frame. |

How high off the ground does this have to be installed? The manufacturer suggests the cutout be no less than 4" from the bottom edge of your door. Make sure that it is at a comfortable height for your pet to step over and the top of the flap is at least 1" over the top of your pet's shoulders. |

How can I clean the flap? A clean rag and freshwater can be used to clean accumulated grime and dirt. Strong detergents like pine or lemon oil will permanently damage the flap panels. |

How does the sliding cover stay secured? There are channels in the interior frame you can slide your security panel cover into. Additionally, there is a locking latch to make sure it cannot be slid up and down. |

Is this available in any other colors? Unfortunately, the Ideal Pet Products Designer frame only comes in white. A possible alternative is to spray paint the frame to match your home. |

Good that I am experienced with making things and was able to cut my opening tighter than the pattern allows. Makes it a tighter and more lasting fit. Need to get another one here for winter so I don't have to leave a door open for my pups to get outside. Just have the door in my storm door right now only.
Good replacement
This was a replacement for a 15 year old door. It slipped right into the previous hole and was an easy installation.
Love this doggie door!
I have two of these doggie doors that have been in use by two to three 10-14 pound doggies for the past 10 years (one door from house to enclosed porch and one from the porch to the outdoor deck and fenced yard). The fur babies love them and want to use them even if the door is open, silly dogs! The flaps finally wore out at the top and I am ordering replacement flaps as well as a whole new unit for back door that leads to a new lawn area for doggies to enjoy. Since the two existing doors have been sans their flaps its been clear to tell how much the flaps insulate from breezes, drafts and the occasional blown-in leaves. It will be good to have flaps again as the cooler weather approaches. Being able to close off the doors with the sliding panels is a very welcome feature to keep raccoons from sneaking in if doggies and I are gone, or to keep doggies from going out on nights when coyotes roam our rural community. Thank you for this great product and for the detailed instructions that made it clear which replacement flaps to order to fit my doors. I highly recommend this product! Thank you so much!

...been using this doggie door for approximately 25 yrs ...dogs seem to love it....they learn how to use it quickly and keep my wife and I from constantly attending them to go in or out....also very durable...works as described.
Perfect for my needs
I had a super large Ideal Pet door installed in 2000 and it was due for a new flap (just the second in 18 years) when my lab was playing vigorously outdoors and didn't see the door block was in. She ran into it at full speed and didn't break the door block but busted out the channels which guide it. Actually, the plastic held up and it ripped out of the wall! It is so sturdy that it is a wonder she didn't break her neck. So I ordered another one which installed easily and I am sure I will get another 20 years out of this one - but I am going to put a big black "X" on the part of the block facing outdoors so maybe the speed queen lab will notice!

This was a replacement for a 15 year old door. It slipped right into the previous hole and was an easy installation.

I have two of these doggie doors that have been in use by two to three 10-14 pound doggies for the past 10 years (one door from house to enclosed porch and one from the porch to the outdoor deck and fenced yard). The fur babies love them and want to use them even if the door is open, silly dogs! The flaps finally wore out at the top and I am ordering replacement flaps as well as a whole new unit for back door that leads to a new lawn area for doggies to enjoy. Since the two existing doors have been sans their flaps its been clear to tell how much the flaps insulate from breezes, drafts and the occasional blown-in leaves. It will be good to have flaps again as the cooler weather approaches. Being able to close off the doors with the sliding panels is a very welcome feature to keep raccoons from sneaking in if doggies and I are gone, or to keep doggies from going out on nights when coyotes roam our rural community. Thank you for this great product and for the detailed instructions that made it clear which replacement flaps to order to fit my doors. I highly recommend this product! Thank you so much!

...been using this doggie door for approximately 25 yrs ...dogs seem to love it....they learn how to use it quickly and keep my wife and I from constantly attending them to go in or out....also very durable...works as described.
Perfect for my needs
I had a super large Ideal Pet door installed in 2000 and it was due for a new flap (just the second in 18 years) when my lab was playing vigorously outdoors and didn't see the door block was in. She ran into it at full speed and didn't break the door block but busted out the channels which guide it. Actually, the plastic held up and it ripped out of the wall! It is so sturdy that it is a wonder she didn't break her neck. So I ordered another one which installed easily and I am sure I will get another 20 years out of this one - but I am going to put a big black "X" on the part of the block facing outdoors so maybe the speed queen lab will notice!
